Tips Before Painting A Metal Roof

Posted by admin on Saturday, 6 April 2013

Paint a Metal RoofMany people choose metal roofs for their homes and businesses because this type of roofing can last 50 years or more and need little maintenance. However, that paint on your metal roof may not last nearly as long as the roofing material itself, so in order to maintain your homes appearance you may consider Painting your roof to keep it looking as good as the rest of the outside of your home.

However, painting a metal roof is not the same as painting those inside walls, or even the outside of your home so here are a few tips that may prove helpful when attempting to paint that metal roof.

  1. Inspect your roof regularly. While metal roofs can be painted if the paint is faded or chalky quite easily, they probably shouldn't be painted if the paint has begun to flake, as there may be a problem with the color adhering to the roof. In cases, where peeling has all ready begun to occur it is best to seek a professional to refinish the roof rather than simply to paint it. So therefore a regular inspection can help you to catch your roof before any peeling begins to take place.

  2. Replace or Repair Any Damage. During your inspection of your roof, you should not any areas of damage that might need to be repaired or replaced and have this work done before you attempt to do painting. There really isn't any real benefit to covering up damaged areas then having to make repairs.

  3. Hire a Professional or at Least get Professional Advice. Every type of metal has it's own unique properties and therefore there is no one sealant or metal paint that will work equally well on all types of metal. Therefore, you should hire a professional that has years of experience in working on painting different types of metal roofs to do the job for you or at the very least get the advice of a professional in order to get the job done the right way from the start.

  4. Choose an Energy Efficient Paint. Some colors and types of paint are more energy efficient than others so when painting a metal roof make sure that you choose paint that is going to help to increase the energy efficiency of your home. The money you spend on having your roof professionally painting can easily be made up for by increasing your homes energy efficiency and saving money on heating and cooling bills.

Part of having a great looking home that has curb appeal is having a nice looking roof that matches your home. Painting a metal roof properly is the best way of keeping your roof and you home looking great.
